Laser Surgery Might Be One Of The More Recent Innovations of Medical Science But It Has A Large Number Of Applications And The List Of Laser Treatments Continues To Expand
There are numerous kinds of surgery available to treat every area of the body, but one of the more recent additions to the list is laser surgery. Most people have most likely heard of it, but few may realise that there are several different types of laser surgery out there.
There are three basic sorts of laser surgery, and the principal difference between them is that they employ different kinds of laser, which is probably an obvious thing to say when taking into account the various places in the human body where they can be employed. The major advantage of using a laser as opposed to a scalpel is that there is never any physical contact with the body so there is only minimal risk of infection, on top of which the patient will probably recover more quickly too.
Hard Tissue Laser Surgery is employed – as the name suggests – on things such as bones, and more usually, teeth. Dental uses can include early detection of tooth decay, preparation work for fillings and treatment for temperature sensitive teeth. One of the benefits of using lasers for these procedures is that they also kill any bacteria in the tooth which has the problem, potentially also reducing the likelihood of the patient facing further problems.
The second kind of surgery is Soft Tissue Laser Surgery. This, as the name infers, is used on softer areas of the body. It is used in Dentistry for helping the gums, but has many other applications as well. Amongst these are treatments for the brain, spine and nervous system, for ears, nose and throat, for the head, neck and face, and for many areas of the torso.
The third type of surgery is likely to be the one which people are most aware of – Laser eye surgery. There are quite a few different Laser eye treatments which can be recommended to improve the eyesight of the patient. Whilst not every eye condition can be treated by Laser eye surgery, new advances are being investigated in this field and there is every chance that in the future there will be more Laser eye treatments approved for use, as indeed may well be the case for other parts of the body as well.
There are, obviously, other sorts of laser treatment available for some body parts, but generally speaking most surgical uses of lasers fall into the three categories mentioned above.
