It’s no wonder that 10 million Americans are already diagnosed with the osteoporosis while 34 million more are at risk – many factors can lead to the development of the said brittle bone disease. Yet, the list just keep on growing as recent investigations suggest that high cholesterol may contribute to osteoporosis in aging women. Let’s not forget about several medicines that are widely used can also hasten the thinning of the bones.

By now, most of us are already aware how drugs like steroids or corticosteroids, thyroid medications, antacids with aluminum can cause rapid bone loss. Apart from that there are still a lot of medications that may lead the decline of the bone density of a person.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This group of drugs work by hampering the production of gastric acid. These drugs are widely used for prevention or treatment of peptic ulcers and acid reflux diseases. Unfortunately, the long-term consumption of these drugs have been linked to the development of osteoporosis-related fractures on the hips, wrist, or spine.

Antibiotics. Studies determined to establish the link between osteoporosis and antibiotic use enthralls many as they draw out opposite findings. One study claims that the use of antibiotics over a long course can result to severe osteoporosis while another study points that antibiotics do help in treating bone loss. While the truth has not been finally revealed, it is best to always monitor the status of your bone density especially if you are on antibiotics for a long time.

Loop Diuretics. These drugs are often prescribed to treat patients with congestive heart failure or high blood pressure because they increase volume of urine. However, loop diuretics tend to suppress bone development by increasing the calcium excreted by the kidneys to the urine. Among the most common loop diuretics are Lasix, Bumex, Edecrin and Demadex.

While there are still more prescriptions drugs whose side effects may include bone loss, it is best to check the medication guide and ask your doctor about the side effects of the drugs you are taking. Osteoporosis is considered by many as the most debilitating disease and Fosamax, its most prescribed treatment, is known to cause severe adverse events including atypical thigh bone fractures. There are already several harmed individuals who filed a Fosamax lawsuit against the maker of the drug –Merck, for allegedly failing to warn its patients about the risk.
